Google’s latest update – how did it go?

Google constantly adjusts its algorithms, usually small changes, but in June 2022 they carried out a major update, a so-called “Core” update of how the search results are ranked. This update seems to have affected some sites significantly.

If your site has been affected positively, you can always claim that you did a good job, and if your site has been affected negatively, you can always blame Google’s update…

Facts about “Google May 2022 Core Update”

What do we know about this major phone number library update, given the imaginative name “Google May 2022 Core Update”? Personally, I liked when Google had a little cuter names for their updates like Hummingbird, Penguin and Panda.

This update was scheduled for May 25th, 2022 and took 15 days to “roll out” as they say these days.

Purpose

That this update is called “Core” means that it is there to make the general ranking process better. That is, increase the relevance of the search results so that they become more useful for the searcher.

Consequences

Although the “May 2022 Core Update” did not target specific pages, the consequences of the changes in the ranking algorithm may mean that some pages lose positions on Google’s search results page (SERP – Search Engine Result Page) and that some pages gain positions.

The update is merely a change in how the system assesses content on a general level.

Reactions to the update [with examples of changes in traffic]

Of course, the fact that many express negative opinions about the update does not mean that it is bad. Dissatisfaction triggers the eagerness to tweet about it. Anyway, here are some views and examples (both positive and negative) culled from Twitter:

“Thanks, Google for ruining our time and hard work”

That was rather smooth. No cl lists significant interruptions compared to some previous Core Updates. Only flushed some Rankings that weren’t super relevant in the first place. Resulting in good CTR development.

“Thanks! It was a good ride! Looking forward to the next one!”

Seriously? Please explain this to me Google. Was 4th on page 1 for a particular term. Now there are 15 sites above us that are all redirect sites. 13 of them show errors when you click on the pages. This for multiple terms  worst update I’ve ever seen!
